Jonathan Richman, creator of indelible rock-savant moments such as Roadrunner, Pablo Picasso and That Summer Feeling, has written and recorded a poem exclusively for MOJO.
The preposterously youthful 60-year-old is currently touring the UK, and while MOJO’s requests for an interview met with the usual polite refusal, Richman offered to interview himself in the form of a poem. This he faxed to MOJO via his record label, Vapor, before volunteering to record this audio version.
“So Jonathan, does it feel at all strange to be sixty years old?” Richman begins, “Singing in clubs now for forty odd years?”
He proceeds, hilariously, to outline his strategy for less well-attended shows before musing upon his unabated enthusiasm and claiming “I’m just learning gui-tar, I’m just learning to sing…”
It’s typically ingenuous, heart-warming stuff from a unique singer and songwriter with a consistently life-affirming worldview.
I try not to think too much about how much happier my life might be if a Jonathan Richman clone was my dad.
